Overcome Pride with Humility

We’ve touched on humility in prior chapters, but in reference to it being a powerful antidote to pride, it is the key to introducing lasting change in our lives. Humility is simply a lowliness of mind. It is viewing our conclusions, ideas, doctrine, theology, and perspectives as being open to adjustment from the Lord. We have to recognize the things in our lives that we have not learned from God but instead learned through being spoon fed information by well intended leaders, parents, friends, and even pastors.

“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God,

that He may exalt you in due time,” – 1 Peter 5:6 (NKJV)

The most interesting aspect of humility is not the immediate state of lowliness of mind that it requires, but rather it is the future that it promises. Humility promises a future of being exalted in due time. This is in direct contrast to the exaltation method of pride.

Pride is the action of lifting oneself to position of undeserved recognition and supremacy. It is a self serving action that does not consider the possible contributions of others as equal to the contributions of self. Pride is a self appointment to a position of supposed higher rank and worth. What the prideful man doesn’t understand is that when a person lifts themselves up it only takes the actions of another person to bring them low again.

The exhalation method of humility works in an opposite and much more efficient way than pride. Humility brings oneself low, awaiting for the open door and appointment of promotion from the Lord. The person with a humble mind is in position for the Lord to open doors and opportunities on their behalf, because that person can be trusted to wield the new responsibility with the same disposition they have been exhibiting all along, humility and respect of others. Humility serves patiently, waiting for the Lord to open doors that no man can shut (Revelations 3:8)

The person of a humble mind waits for new revelation from the Lord and the power of God during their fast. Interesting that this person is elevated by God, but doesn’t look down on people who have yet to be elevated to their position. Humility is required to receive new revelation and the miraculous power of God as we fast and throughout our lives.

Lets understand that the humbling of ourselves is called “humility”, but when God has to do it for us its called “humiliation”. No one like the latter form of humility, but we all need it from time to time. The more true humility we exhibit, the more doors we will find open for us.
